A selection of Dan Torop's eloquent and understated photographs is gathered into
the book format in Skydiving, A-Jump Books’ seventh publication.
Made over the past three years, these images build on
Torop’s on-going use of the natural world to reflect
on ideas of estrangement,
and the occasional joy that can arise through nuanced moments of reconciliation.
In what he describes as “heavy,” and “grim work,” these pictures are novelistic
in tone, emotional in flow, with moral and psychological dimensions. Torop works
with people, animals, and places with which he has a strong connection, thereby
grounding the work in experiential reality. Approachable and calmly introspective,
Skydiving is less about perfect moments of beauty than of finding subtle feelings
and letting them live in a picture.
